Village Garden Apartments Celebrates 20 Years

Village Garden Apartments, the first of two affordable housing buildings on the campus of the Village, celebrated their 20th anniversary April 22, 2010. VGA has provided income qualified Residents housing since 1990, through a partnership with the U.S. Housing and Urban Development’s 202 Program.

Residents celebrated the anniversary at their monthly pot-luck dinner with cake, entertainment, and a sparkling cider toast. Residents enjoyed an evening of fun, food and fellowship with a performance by Tom Arnold, a local magician and Lancaster Barnstormers radio play-by-play announcer. Residents Bernice Knox and Esther Hoffer, who have lived at VGA for 20 years, were honored with photos and story keepsakes.

The success of VGA and a continued need for affordable housing led Brethren Village to open Fairview Meadows in 2007, which features 60 one-bedroom apartments.

“Brethren Village prides itself on providing housing for Residents of various financial capabilities. I feel honored to celebrate with Bernice and Esther as we ring in 20 years of Village life here in VGA,” stated John Baker, Manager of Affordable Housing at the Village.
