Resident Workshop Lends a Hand

In January 2009, the Covenant Crossing addition welcomed 135 new residential living apartments to the Fieldcrest building… an example of our community’s growth and progress.

Followed by the 2009 renovations of Fieldcrest West, initially built in 1993, Residents solicited help from the Brethren Village Resident Workshop to create matching wooden shelving adjacent to apartment entrances. To provide a consistent look to the building’s interior, the wooden shelves are often home to a Residents’ personal trinkets, pictures or flowers.

Using pinewood and plywood, the Resident Workshop cut and assembled 134 shelves — a more affordable and rewarding experience than hiring an outside contractor. The shelves were then sent to Dean Way, the Village’s primary in-house painter, who then prepped and painted them white prior to installation by the Facilities Management team.

Residents who donated their time and talents included William Adams, Mervin Andrews, Elmer Bare, David Hollinger, Harold Kimmel, Galen Miley, Charles Pawling, Dr. Charles Pratt, George Rissler, Jacob Toews and Dr. Charles Wolfe.

“This is an example of team workmanship. The workshop gladly participated without any questions, and we hope the Residents of Fieldcrest are satisfied with the quality of the work,” stated Miley.
